After spending a solid year at Coyote Howls West RV Campground, I can say with certainty that for many, it is a welcome reprieve from a road-tour moving along Arizona’s route 85 south to Mexico, while for others, it is a welcoming return for the extended camping experience, whether for a few weeks or a handful on months, particularly during the winter.

The general demographic foments an environment of a rather easy going and pleasant energy.  Folks are friendly and approachable, and the management is rather attentive and progressive, yet non-intrusive.  Respectful campers enjoy a cozy and relatively peaceful experience in a well-maintained, micro-neighborhood.

Kids are quite welcome, as well-managed pets, and the dynamic here is an interesting mix of backgrounds and lifestyles, all of whom tend to share a common sense of friendliness and disinterest in drama.

The wildlife is my draw, in particular, and I’ve found endless joy and entertainment exploring the diversity of the Sonoran Desert BLM land just beyond the campground area. The campground proper has its fair share of wildlife visitors, too, however, from a variety of birds, including owls and hawks, to desert-toads and frequent, nighttime serenades from passing-through coyotes and braying donkeys.  There is some Wi-Fi available, some trails of varying intensity for bicycling or ATV exploration, a couple of conveniently proximal general-stores with motor fuel available, and we’re only 10 miles from the town of Ajo.

The full hook ups are easily accessible and maintained, and the campground itself presents as a quaint desert-gem with manicured fan-palms, bamboo, oleander, and tireless attention of management to serene and pleasant landscaping effects.

The mountain backdrop to the northwest creates a dark, textured contrast to the rich sunsets, and there’s often a small gathering around a community campfire in the evenings for general conversation.  I am partial to the overall laid-back energy and liberty to choose to join the circle or tend to my thoughts in privacy with no expectations save for common courtesy and respect.
